Washougal is an affluent, growing community of around 14,000, located along the Columbia River in southwest Washington, near Vancouver, Washington. A former supply camp for fur traders and explorers, Washougal real estate is one of the oldest settlements in Washington state.
Today, the community serves as more of a bedroom community to nearby Vancouver and Portland, Oregon (just across the Columbia River), although remnants of the town's frontier past can be seen in the downtown storefronts, many of which date from the 19th century.
Shopping and Dining
Most popular, big-box retailers are represented in Washougal. In addition, the city is home to Pendleton Woolen Mills Outlet Store, where the popular clothing and blanket manufacturer sells its wares at a fraction of the suggested retail price. Shoppers seeking more unique offerings will enjoy the revitalized downtown shopping district and the new Town Center shopping complex.
Dining out is a popular pastime in the Pacific Northwest region, and Washougal is no exception. In fact, one of the best things about owning Washougal Washington real estate is the plethora of locally-owned restaurants, most of which make good use of local fish, game and produce. Highlights include the Puffin Cafe, a Caribbean-style eatery on the Columbia River waterfront; Los 2 Compadres, Washougal's favorite Mexican restaurant; and Hearth Bistro, a rustic and casual dining option in the heart of downtown.
Parks and Recreation
For a small community, Washougal has plenty of park land. The city manages 14 parks, including two waterfront green spaces. Washougal is also adjacent to the 900-acre Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge, a part of the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. The Washougal River, which bisects the town, is a favorite regional salmon and steelhead fishing locale.
Since 1971 Washougal Motocross Park has attracted race fans. Each year the prestigious Lucas Oil National Motocross Series, which brings over 20,000 people to the foothills of southwest Washington in July, pays a visit to Washougal MX Park.
Washougal Washington real estate encompasses both the new and the old. The city is growing rapidly and the local government expects the population to double in the next ten years. To accommodate this influx of residents, new developments are being built in and around the city. In addition, you'll find traditional, restored Victorian homes, sparkling waterfront houses and properties with acres of prairie land accompanying the house. According to CNN Money, the median cost of a home in Washougal is $324,000.
Schools, Health, Transportation
Children of school age in Washougal attend the two high schools, two middle schools and three elementary schools that make up the Washougal School District.
Local health care needs are met by the six locations of the Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital in nearby Vancouver.
Given the small size of Washougal, there is no public transportation system. The Lewis and Clark Highway (SR-14) connects the Washougal to other cities in the Columbia River Gorge region. The nearest commercial airport to Washougal is Portland International Airport in Portland, Oregon, located about 20 miles away.
